You will have some advantage if you also determine who your competition is before you proceed. If your competition is large, you may want to choose another product. Another option is to make sure that your prices or website are much better than your competitors. The easiest way to see your potential competition is to enter your desired keyword into Google. You can see how many pages are found containing your term. There will probably be a lot of SERP results. Don't be discouraged yet. Visit a few of those websites. Can your website provide more specific information on your topic and product? Or maybe you can offer more alternatives, better prices, or something that makes your website more desirable than theirs. Make notes what websites you might want to contact later for possible linking partners. OR, if you decide you want to choose another product line, or keyword phrase, you can "play" with the keyword tools and using them to search yourself. A good goal is to discover a highly searched term with low competition to choose a more profitable market, or product line. It requires some effort, but with this method you will understand your competition. Review eBusiness Models about popular products for Internet Businesses. Most people I have talked to like Wordtracker for keyword research. It has a free trial to see how it works. You can download Good Keywords from Softnik to run on your PC. They have a free version and other tools you might want. There will likely be more and better tools around too. There may be new features that will help in your analysis. A new keyword tool has just been brought to my attention. The free trial did not work well for me, but they may have fixed the problem. You can give it a try - Keyword Research Tool by Trellian. I will stick with WordTracker. Website Design - Look ProfessionalAnother important aspect in getting a visitor to purchase your product is to have a professional looking website that has clear navigation links. It should look nice, load fast, and have all the links working right. Missing graphics is the first sign that a website is not being maintained properly, and a turn off for customers. Finish your website and make sure it works well before you spend money on advertising. Convince Them to Buy with Strong "Ad Copy"The content you enter into your website should be relevant to your product and should ultimately convince a visitor to purchase your product. This is commonly called copywriting, or writing "ad copy", or simply sales copy. It was commonly called "dm copy" for direct mail copy used in direct mail sales letters prior to the rise of the Internet. Now dm copy is considered an old term. Good ad copy is VERY important to getting sales. Just posting a nice picture and pasting a description does not work very well. Persuasion techniques are very important. There is a lot of information on using the "art of persuasion" for your ad campaigns (and everywhere in life). A while ago I took a course on Copywriting from AWAI (the American Writers and Artists Institute). I learned a LOT, realized I wasn't naturally inclined to use it and have begun to focus on it more because it is so important. A quick summary is to make an interesting and strong sales pitch using persuasion, strong titles, testimonials, PS. at the end to recap your offer and urgency, and bonuses. They say it is a skill that anyone can learn. All the Internet millionaires use strong ad copy. These hard sales pitches are claimed to work really well. The Internet gurus are millionaires. A name for this method is the Internet Sales Letter. The technique became highly popularized by Yanik Silver, one of the most famous Internet gurus. I discuss Yanik Silver more in Sell Information Products and in Yanik Silver review. Yanik "automated" the process of creating strong ad copy with his first major successful website InstantSalesLetters.com. Yanik has taught the value of a 2-3 page website with a very long main page that promotes a single product with stong ad copy. He is one of those millionaires. If your Internet Business is a catalog store model, or affiliate store model with sensational or hard-to-find products or very low prices, you might be successful with good traffic and without using strong ad copy. It really depends on your business. Just think of why you buy what YOU buy, how you were convinced to purchase, and how you can weave that knowledge into your website.
